Engaging with our World > Our Ministries > Canada-Dominican Republic Experience
The Canada/Dominican Republic Experience is an initiative of Kairos Spirituality-for-Social Justice Centre, a ministry sponsored by the Grey Sisters of Pembroke. This project offers young adults (ages 17 (graduate of high school -25) the opportunity to experience the Canadian reality, as well as that of the Dominican Republic.

Through reflection in light of their faith and sound social analysis, the goal is to make connections between both realities and to decide on actions which will help educate others and bring about structural change for the common good of both countries.

Those who participated in the Canada/Dominican Republic Experience organized summer camp activities in Sabana Perdida, Los Praditos and Antonci, a bataye near Yamasa, for local children, offering a wide variety of educational and recreational activities. Reflecting on his experience, Danny Jones observes: "I have gained in perspective regarding the great disparities between the rich and the poor and, more specifically, the social, political and economic systems that further impoverish the country and the people."

Over the past 20 years, a large number of young people have taken part in the Canada/Dominican Republic Experience and many others have travelled to the D.R. through exposure trips organized by their own high schools. On May 2-4, 2008, some 100 of them participated in a reunion weekend at Marguerite Centre in Pembroke. They had connected with Grey Sister communities in Consuelo, Yamasa, Sabana Perdida and Los Prados and now had the opportunity to reunite with some of their Dominican friends from these areas. The weekend was a time to share experiences, build community and reflect on how working together on projects in the Dominican Republic had impacted their lives. As well, there were opportunities to explore development and justice issues affecting their realities both in Canada and in the Dominican Republic. For details on the presenters and workshops, see the web site at www.drreunion.org.

The opening address, titled "Faith and Justice: The Global Context" was delivered by Darlene O'Leary, Executive Director of Galilee Centre in Arnprior, Ontario.
